What is spot trading in crypto?

Spot trading is buying or selling a coin for immediate delivery at the current price: you pay dollars and own the coin outright. There is no borrowing and no expiry date, so the most you can lose is what you paid. It is the opposite of trading with leverage or derivatives.

From the Staxo crypto glossary. The examples use Kraken daily candles (UTC), Oct 10, 2025 to Oct 10, 2026, for the eight coins on Staxo's free plan that are not stablecoins.

How spot trading works

On the spot market you pay the full price and the coin is yours at once. There is no loan, no expiry date and no liquidation price. You can hold it as long as you like, move it to a wallet or sell it at any time. The spot price is simply the current market price for buying now.

The alternative is trading contracts on the price, such as futures and perpetual swaps, usually with leverage. Those let you control more than you put in and bet on falls as well as rises, but they add a liquidation price. On a spot trade the worst case is that the coin falls toward zero. You cannot lose more than you paid.

Ethereum$326.29$203.93, Jun 25, 202619 of 365
BNB$318.51$231.83, Jun 30, 20263 of 365

Cardano$189.84$109.48, Jun 25, 20268 of 365

Only TRON ended above $500. Cardano fell the furthest, to $189.84. Bitcoin spent only 5 days of the 365 above its buy price. Every spot buyer here sat through a loss at some point, but no one was forced out: a spot position stays open until you sell it.

Spot vs leverage on the same coins

Now take the same $500 as margin for a 5x long, a $2,500 position, opened at the same close. At 5x, a fall of 20% from the entry uses up the whole margin. On daily closes, that happened to seven of the eight coins, the first being BNB and Cardano, both on Nov 4, 2025. Bitcoin's 5x long would have been liquidated on Nov 20, 2025, losing the whole $500, while the spot buyer still had $366.87 at the end.

TRON never closed 20% below the start, so a 5x long there would have survived and ended $72.82 ahead. Leverage multiplies the result both ways, as long as the position lives that long.

Real liquidations happen on live prices, not daily closes, so a leveraged position can be closed earlier than these numbers show.

How to practice it in Staxo

The Staxo free plan is spot trading. You start with $500 in demo money and buy and sell 10 coins, including all eight on this page, with market orders, up to 10 trades a day. Each buy is a spot position: it shows in your Portfolio with its profit and loss and stays open until you sell.

Staxo Pro adds leveraged long and short positions at 1x, 2x and 5x, each with its liquidation price. A good way to see the difference is to hold a small spot position and a small 5x position on the same coin at the same time, and watch how differently they react to the same moves.

Spot trading questions

Can you lose money in spot trading?

Yes. Spot trading removes liquidation, not price risk. $500 of Bitcoin bought at the Oct 10, 2025 close was worth $366.87 on Oct 10, 2026. What you cannot lose is more than you put in.

What is the difference between spot and futures trading?

In spot trading you buy and own the coin. In futures you trade a contract on its price, usually with leverage, often without ever owning the coin. Futures can profit from falls and control a bigger position, but they can be liquidated.

Try it with $500 in demo money.
