What does HODL mean?
HODL is crypto slang for holding a coin through its ups and downs instead of trading it. It began as a misspelling of "hold" in a 2013 Bitcoin forum post and was later read as "hold on for dear life". A HODLer buys and waits, judging the result over years rather than days.
From the Staxo crypto glossary. The examples use Kraken daily candles (UTC), Oct 10, 2025 to Oct 10, 2026, for the eight coins on Staxo's free plan that are not stablecoins.
Where HODL comes from
In December 2013 a user of the Bitcointalk forum posted a message titled "I AM HODLING", written while the price of Bitcoin was falling fast. The misspelling of "hold" and the honest frustration in the post made it a meme. Later, people turned it into an acronym, "hold on for dear life".
Today HODL means a plan more than a joke: buy a coin you believe in and keep it through crashes and rallies, instead of trying to sell before falls and buy back before rises. A HODLer measures the result in years. The opposite is active trading, which tries to profit from the swings along the way.
What holding for one year looked like
| Coin | Worth on Oct 10, 2026 | Lowest value on the way | Days above the buy price | Max drawdown |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TRON | $514.56 | $418.62, Feb 5, 2026 | 173 of 365 | -16.7% |
| Bitcoin | $366.87 | $258.99, Jun 30, 2026 | 5 of 365 | -49.2% |
| Ethereum | $326.29 | $203.93, Jun 25, 2026 | 19 of 365 | -63.1% |
| BNB | $318.51 | $231.83, Jun 30, 2026 | 3 of 365 | -58.1% |
| XRP | $295.07 | $209.03, Aug 16, 2026 | 22 of 365 | -62.5% |
| Solana | $291.23 | $164.58, Jun 6, 2026 | 12 of 365 | -70.2% |
| Dogecoin | $220.92 | $177.96, Aug 6, 2026 | 12 of 365 | -67.7% |
| Cardano | $189.84 | $109.48, Jun 25, 2026 | 8 of 365 | -80.3% |
Holding through the year ended above $500 only for TRON. A Bitcoin holder who bought at the Oct 10, 2025 close spent 5 days of the next 365 above the buy price and saw the $500 drop as low as $258.99 on Jun 30, 2026. TRON spent the most days above its buy price, 173.
That is the real test of HODLing: not the end result, but sitting through the maximum drawdown without selling.
HODL, dollar-cost averaging and trading
HODLing is usually paired with dollar-cost averaging: buying a fixed amount on a schedule instead of everything at once. In this window, 52 weekly buys of the same $500 ended higher than a single buy for all eight coins, because the later buys came at lower prices. For Bitcoin, $540.43 against $366.87.
Holding skips the hardest part of trading, which is timing, and the fees of frequent trades. It needs a long horizon and the nerve to watch large paper losses. One year is a short window for a HODLer, so read these numbers as one example of what holding feels like, not as a verdict on it.
How to practice it in Staxo
You can try both styles side by side in Staxo with the $500 in demo money. Put part of it into one free-plan coin and do not touch it for a month, whatever the price does. Trade another part actively with the free plan's 10 trades a day.
At the end of the month, compare the two in your Portfolio, and write down how often you were tempted to sell the held coin. That second number is what HODLing is really about.

HODL questions
What does HODL stand for?
Originally nothing: it was a typo of "hold" in a 2013 Bitcoin forum post. The acronym "hold on for dear life" was added later, and both meanings are used today.
Is HODLing a good strategy?
It depends on the coin, the period and whether you can hold through deep drops. From Oct 10, 2025 to Oct 10, 2026, holding $500 ended above $500 on one of the eight free-plan coins. A different start date or a longer period can give a very different result, which is why many holders spread their buys over time.
