What is trading volume in crypto?
Trading volume is the amount of a coin traded over a period, counted in coins or in dollars. High volume means many participants and usually tighter prices. Traders read it next to the price: a move on rising volume is taken as stronger than the same move on thin volume.
From the Staxo crypto glossary. The examples use Kraken daily candles (UTC), Oct 10, 2025 to Oct 10, 2026, for the eight coins on Staxo's free plan that are not stablecoins.
How trading volume is measured
Volume counts how much of a coin was traded over a period, usually a day. Exchanges report it in coins, and multiplying by the average price of the day turns it into dollars. Each trade has a buyer and a seller, so one coin changing hands counts once, not twice.
The numbers on this page are Kraken's USD markets only: the daily volume in coins times the day's volume-weighted average price (VWAP). That is a small slice of all crypto trading, so the absolute figures are much lower than the 24-hour volume a market data site shows across many exchanges. They are still useful for comparing days and coins on the same venue.
Volume on the top coins in the last 12 months
| Coin | Median day | Busiest day | Volume that day | Price move that day | Median move, 10 busiest days | Median move, all days |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin | $144 million | Feb 5, 2026 | $817 million | -13.9% | 4.9% | 1.26% |
| Ethereum | $58 million | Nov 7, 2025 | $320 million | +3.6% | 4.8% | 1.60% |
| Solana | $31 million | Feb 6, 2026 | $123 million | +11.8% | 6.8% | 1.82% |
| XRP | $25 million | Aug 22, 2026 | $328 million | +0.5% | 6.8% | 1.63% |
| Dogecoin | $5.9 million | Oct 11, 2025 | $67 million | -4.4% | 8.2% | 1.72% |
| Cardano | $5.0 million | Dec 29, 2025 | $26 million | -4.2% | 4.7% | 2.38% |
| TRON | $1.0 million | Jun 5, 2026 | $4.7 million | -3.7% | 2.2% | 0.66% |
| BNB | $0.7 million | Oct 12, 2025 | $16 million | +14.7% | 3.9% | 1.20% |
On Kraken, Bitcoin traded the most, a median $144 million a day, and BNB the least, $0.7 million. Bitcoin's busiest day was Feb 5, 2026, with $817 million traded, which was also its worst day of the year: the price moved -13.9%.
What high volume tells you, and what it does not
Big moves draw big volume. On Bitcoin's 10 busiest days, the price moved a median 4.9%, against 1.26% on a typical day. Across the eight coins, 46 of the 80 busiest days were down days: a little more than half of the heaviest trading came in sell-offs.
Traders read volume next to the price. A rise on rising volume is seen as backed by many buyers, a rise on thin volume as easier to reverse. A spike in volume during a sharp fall can mark capitulation, but it is only recognized afterwards. Volume does not say which way the price goes next.
It is also a rough measure of liquidity: the more a coin trades, the easier it is to buy or sell without moving the price. Reported volume on small exchanges is not always reliable, which is why these examples use one large exchange.
How to practice it in Staxo
Every coin screen in Staxo lists the coin's 24H Volume next to its market cap, across the whole market rather than one exchange. Before a demo trade, write down the 24-hour volume and the price change of the day, and compare a few coins from the free plan.
Over a few weeks, note the days when a coin you hold moved more than 5%. Check whether its volume that day was above its usual level, then look at what the price did over the next days in your Portfolio. It is a simple way to learn how volume and price move together, with demo money instead of your own.
