What is a market correction in crypto?
A market correction is a fall of at least 10% from a recent peak. It is a common pullback, usually shorter and shallower than a bear market, which by the usual definition starts at a 20% fall. In crypto, 10% moves come so often that corrections are part of a normal year.
From the Staxo crypto glossary. The examples use Kraken daily candles (UTC), Oct 10, 2025 to Oct 10, 2026, for the eight coins on Staxo's free plan that are not stablecoins.
Correction, bear market, crash: the thresholds
- Pullback: any dip from a recent high, usually under 10%.
- Correction: a fall of 10% or more from a recent peak.
- Bear market: a fall of 20% or more, usually lasting months.
- Crash: a sudden, steep fall over a few days. There is no fixed threshold, the speed is what defines it.
The thresholds come from the stock market, where a 10% fall is a notable event. Crypto moves several times as much, so the same labels apply much more often.
How many corrections the top coins had in 12 months
To count them, every fall of 10% or more from a high counts as one correction once the price has bounced 10% off its low, or if it is still running at the end of the window. The next one starts from the high after that bounce.
| Coin | Corrections | Deeper than 20% | Deepest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cardano | 15 | 6 | -44.5%, May 10, 2026 to Jun 5, 2026 |
| Solana | 13 | 3 | -46.7%, Jan 14, 2026 to Feb 5, 2026 |
| Dogecoin | 13 | 5 | -41.8%, Jan 5, 2026 to Feb 5, 2026 |
| XRP | 12 | 3 | -48.4%, Jan 5, 2026 to Feb 5, 2026 |
| Ethereum | 8 | 3 | -45.6%, Jan 14, 2026 to Feb 5, 2026 |
| Bitcoin | 4 | 3 | -35.2%, Jan 14, 2026 to Feb 5, 2026 |
| BNB | 4 | 3 | -38.4%, Jan 14, 2026 to Feb 24, 2026 |
| TRON | 3 | 0 | -16.1%, Oct 12, 2025 to Dec 13, 2025 |
Cardano had the most, 15, and TRON the fewest, 3. Bitcoin's deepest correction ran 35.2% from Jan 14, 2026 to Feb 5, 2026, and 6 of the other 7 coins hit the low of one of their own corrections within three days of it. Corrections in crypto tend to come for the whole market at once.
What a correction means for a trader
Half of Bitcoin's corrections reached their low within 22 days of the peak in this window, and the longest took 51 days. Nobody knows in the middle of one whether it will stop at 10% or turn into a bear market, so the useful questions are practical: how much of your money is exposed, and what will you do at -10% and at -20%?
Leverage changes the answer. A 5x long is liquidated after a 20% fall from its entry, so 3 of Bitcoin's 4 corrections would have liquidated a 5x long opened at their peak.
How to practice it in Staxo
Use Staxo to rehearse a correction before you meet one with real money. Pick one of the free-plan coins and write down in advance what you will do if it falls 10% from where you bought it: hold, add a fixed amount, or close. Then open the position with part of your $500 in demo money and follow your own rule when it happens.
Most beginners find that the plan they wrote calmly is hard to follow in the moment. Practicing it with demo money is how you find out which plan you can actually stick to.

Market correction questions
How often does crypto have a correction?
Often. From Oct 10, 2025 to Oct 10, 2026, Bitcoin had 4 corrections of 10% or more and the eight coins on Staxo's free plan had between 3 and 15 each.
Is a correction the same as a crash?
No. A correction is defined by depth, 10% or more from a peak, and can unfold over weeks. A crash is defined by speed: a steep fall over a day or a few days. A crash is usually also a correction, but most corrections are not crashes.
