What is a golden cross?

A golden cross happens when a shorter moving average, usually the 50-day, crosses above a longer one, usually the 200-day. It shows that recent prices have risen above the longer-term trend. Traders read it as a bullish sign, but it lags: it confirms a rise that has already happened.

From the Staxo crypto glossary. The examples use Kraken daily candles (UTC), Oct 10, 2025 to Oct 10, 2026, for the eight coins on Staxo's free plan that are not stablecoins.

How a golden cross forms

Two simple moving averages are compared every day: the 50-day, which follows the last few months, and the 200-day, which follows the last few quarters. While prices fall, the 50-day sits below the 200-day. Once prices have risen for long enough, the 50-day climbs back above it, and that day is the golden cross.

Because both lines are averages of past closes, the cross comes well after the turn. Bitcoin's golden cross came on Sep 8, 2026 at a close of $78,450. Its lowest close in the 200 days before that was $58,532 on Jun 30, 2026, 70 days earlier, and by the day of the cross the price was already 34.0% above that low.

All eight coins had a golden cross in the window. The first was TRON on Apr 7, 2026, the last Dogecoin on Oct 5, 2026. Each of them followed a death cross earlier in the window.

What happened after these golden crosses

Five of the crosses are at least 30 days old. Thirty days later, all of them were higher: Bitcoin +4.1%, Ethereum +8.8%, BNB +8.6%, Solana +18.1% and TRON +10.6%. The other three came too recently to tell.

These are observed results from one window, a handful of crosses that mostly came within weeks of each other because the coins move together. That is far too few to judge a signal by. A golden cross describes a rise that has already happened, and on its own it says nothing about the next 30 days.

How to practice it in Staxo

The Staxo chart does not draw the 50-day and 200-day averages, so the cross itself is something you track by hand or on a free charting site. The closest thing inside the app is MACD on Pro: when the MACD line moves above zero, the 12-period EMA has crossed above the 26-period EMA, a faster version of the same idea.

To practice with the $500 in demo money, note the date of the next golden cross on two free-plan coins, open a small position in one on that day and leave the other alone, then compare both in your Portfolio after 30 and 90 days. Keep a note of how far each coin had already risen from its low by the time the cross came.

Golden cross questions

Is a golden cross bullish?

It is read as bullish because it shows recent prices above the long-term trend. But it lags: by the time the 50-day average crosses the 200-day, the price has usually risen a long way from its low. It confirms a change that already happened and does not guarantee it continues.

What is the difference between a golden cross and a death cross?

They are mirror images. In a golden cross the 50-day moving average crosses above the 200-day. In a death cross it crosses below. On all eight coins in our data, a death cross between Nov 4, 2025 and Dec 29, 2025 was followed by a golden cross between Apr 7, 2026 and Oct 5, 2026.
